Commissioned by Hospital Rooms in collaboration with Sandwell CAMHS
May 2023 – July 2024

Anchors was developed through a commission by Hospital Rooms, an arts and mental health charity that reimagines clinical environments through artist-led collaboration with patients and staff.

The project took place at Sandwell CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service), a specialist service supporting young people aged 5–18 experiencing severe and complex mental health challenges across the Sandwell borough in the Black Country. Over the course of the project, Marley delivered a series of five workshops with young people, using storytelling as a central method to build trust, explore shared experiences, and shape the direction of the commission. These sessions informed the development of the final artwork.

The outcome was a reimagining of the “Crisis Room,” a space used by the crisis intervention team. Through the project, the room was transformed and renamed the Anchor Room, reflecting a shift toward a more supportive, grounding, and welcoming environment. Developed through ongoing collaboration with young people, Anchors incorporates hand-painted details and a playful reinterpretation of domestic furnishings. The work draws on Marley’s background in social work, embedding care, empathy, and lived experience into the design.
